The Herstory of Kylemore Abbey

From Castle Walls to Abbey Halls - The Women of Kylemore. Kylemore creation and on-going development of the Kylemore estate is something that has been inspired by women's love of peace, serenity and beauty down through the years. Mitchell Henry built the estate and the Duke of Manchester bought it because of both their wives’ all-encompassing love of Kylemore and its surrounds. The Benedictine nuns subsequently bought the estate as it seemed to be encapsulated with the main ethos of their order, PAX, or peace. All these women have made significant contributions to the Kylemore Abbey and the surrounding area.
