Tracton Woods, adjacent the 13th century Cistercian Abbey ruin of Tracta Alba, formerly part of the Abbey Demense providing both wood pasture, medicinal herbs, apiary and copse to fire the Abbey bakery. Following Henry Tudor’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1540s, his favoured subjects were granted possession, subject to “preservation of woodlands”.

Tracton wood, due to its steep and rocky topography comprises pockets of old growth forest continuity, in addition to commercial plantations.

The trees body language and flora will be most reliable in divining Tracton Wood’s stories, battle scars and all.

After the outing we invite you to return to Tracton Arts and Community Centre for a cuppa where our Natural Heritage weekend of events continues.

One of a series of weekend events organised for National Heritage week by Tracton Biodiversity Group.
