'Boyle Abbey, from Monastery to Barracks',
Dr. Rachel Moss, Associate Professor, Department of the History of Art and Architecture, Trinity College Dublin, will give a short illustrated lecture: 'Boyle Abbey, from Monastery to Barracks' in the Main Salon, King House, Boyle. This will be followed by an informal walk with Dr. Moss around the Abbey itself.
Boyle Abbey was constructed for the Cistercian Order of Monks between 1161 and 1220. The abbey church is highly unusual in being constructed in the Romanesque and Gothic styles and featuring outstanding examples of stone carving by masters of the 'School of the West'. After the reformation the abbey was occupied for over a century and a half as a military garrison and for some time also as a home of the King family who were granted abbey lands.
This event is being organised by OPW in collaboration with King House for Heritage Week. It will start in King House with a 40 minute illustrated talk, followed by the short walk to Boyle Abbey for an informal walk and discussion. To book a place contact either King House 071 9663242 or Boyle Abbey 071 9662604.
