Ar Lorg Luimneach Laighean PHASE 2 UPDATE

Phase 2 of Ar Lorg Luimneach Laighean builds on the discoveries and community participation developed during Phase 1 combining local knowledge with professional expertise in archaeology, surveying and digital heritage to investigate the layered history of Limbrick, from the early medieval period to the plantation era. Phase 1 identified previously unknown or poorly understood archaeological features and demonstrated that Limbrick should be understood not as a collection of isolated monuments, but as part of a connected historic landscape.

Phase 1 also highlighted the exceptional concentration of heritage in and around Limbrick, including an early medieval ringfort, medieval and ecclesiastical remains, plantation-period features and other archaeological sites spanning from prehistory to the medieval period. The use of non-invasive survey methods helped reveal features that are difficult to see at ground level, while the StoryMap made the findings more accessible to the wider community.

Phase 2 will extend this work beyond Limbrick itself and place the site within its broader North Wexford setting. The project will combine documentary and map-based research, oral-history collection, field-name recording, LiDAR survey and professional archaeological interpretation. Particular attention will be given to three nearby heritage sites and their spatial and historical relationship with Limbrick.

The project will also expand the digital StoryMap, create new LiDAR-based visual resources, record local knowledge and share findings through public events and community engagement. Overall, Phase 2 aims to deepen understanding of settlement, land use and continuity across the wider landscape while strengthening local heritage skills and public access.
