Walk commemorating "The sale of liquor on Sundays act 1878"

This is a 5km walk commemorating the "Sale of Liquor on Sunday Act 1878 to 1960". During that period poor thirsty men of Ireland had to travel on all Sundays and once they were more than 3 miles from where they regularly slept they were deemed by law to be Bona Fide Travellers which meant were exempt from prosecution and entitled to refreshment. There was a local incident in the 1950s where two neighbours were accused of acting contrary to the law and upon measurement of distances from the public house where they were receiving their refreshment one of them was deemed to be 67 yards within the limited area and was prosecuted for this. In this walk for Heritage Week we will explore two cul de sacs and cross country for 263 yards which created a loop hole to help shorter distance travellers to qualify for refreshment.

This walk is 5 kms long and requires good walking shoes and insect repellent if the good weather lasts. There is a gentle climb at the start. A reasonable level of fitness is required. It will take about 2 and a half hours. There will be lifts at the end to bring you back to your cars. Lunch is an option in Windgap in the tea rooms.
