Irish Uplands Forum visit to Erriff Valley Hill Farm, Co Mayo

Explore the heritage of an upland farm in the Erriff Valley, nestled between Westport and Leenane in the Partry Mountains, County Mayo with the Irish Uplands Forum.

Visit to the farm of Michéal McDonnell, who with his wife, Mary, and four children, run a sheep farming enterprise. We will explore the heritage of the farm, current agri-practices and the challenges facing farmers operating on marginal lands. Hill Farmers are the custodians of our rich uplands habitats while delivering production of high quality food, access to recreation and ecosystems services (biodiversity; carbon sequestration; water supply and storage etc.) for the benefits of society at large. Upland farm families must be recognised for these services, through targeted agri-environmental policies to ensure survival of farming and enhanced biodiversity in our beautiful Uplands.

Who: Anybody of moderate fitness with an interest in heritage is welcome to attend.

LEADERS: Michéal McDonnell will lead us around his farm. He is passionate about sustaining farm families in the uplands, noting the huge benefits that they bring to their local economies and communities. Michéal is a Board member of the Irish Uplands Forum and also of the Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association (INHFA).

Dr Deirdre Lewis is a geologist and will discuss the evolution of the landscape and scenery of the Erriff Valley. She is current Secretary of the Irish Uplands Forum.
