Heritage Open Doors Event ,St. Mary’s Church, now home to Oranmore Library, is a beautifully restored historic site with a rich past. The site was acquired around 1780, and the church building was completed by 1803. A distinctive carved limestone bellcote was added circa 1885, enhancing its architectural charm.
After being deconsecrated in 1974, the church remained boarded up and abandoned for nearly two decades. In 1992, efforts began to bring the building back to life. From 1995 to 2000, extensive restoration was carried out by a dedicated local Restoration Committee. In January 2001, following its official handover to Galway County Council, the building reopened as Oranmore Library.
This Heritage Week, step inside and explore a unique space where history and community meet.
