Step back in time and discover the layers of history hidden beneath the streets of one of Cork's most storied neighbourhoods. Join Cork City Council archaeologist Ciara Brett in conjunction with St. Anne's Church and the Butter Museum, for a guided walk through Shandon, using historic maps to trace the dramatic transformation of this remarkable quarter over the centuries.
From the lost walls of Shandon Castle to the vanished Green Coat School, the once-bustling Butter Market, the Leper Hospital, and the North Infirmary, Ciara will bring to life the buildings and communities that shaped this hilltop neighbourhood — and reveal what survives, hidden in plain sight, to this day.
The walk will culminate at the iconic St Anne's Church, where a Heritage Council-funded conservation project is safeguarding a remarkable collection of artefacts linked to the Green Coat School — including a rare library of books and the beloved Bob and Joan statues. Hear how this living heritage is being preserved for future generations.
Afterwards, join us for a celebratory taste of Shandon itself — refreshments featuring local butter, Shandon sweets, and more, in the shadow of the famous Four-Face Liar.
