Traveller Living Heritage: Protecting Traveller Traditions at Risk
Traveller Living Heritage: Protecting Traveller Traditions at Risk is an immersive Heritage Week event celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Irish Traveller community through storytelling, living history, traditional crafts, and hands-on workshops.
Step back in time with a Traveller Living History Exhibition, featuring a restored barrel-top wagon, a traditional roadside tent and campfire, historical artefacts, and displays recreating Traveller life in the 1950s. Traveller community members will share personal stories and memories of growing up on the road, offering visitors a unique opportunity to hear authentic lived experiences and engage in conversation.
Visitors can also take part in interactive heritage workshops, including a Beady Pocket Workshop, where participants will learn about the history and symbolism of the traditional beady pocket before creating their own, and a Traditional Traveller Bread and Paper Flower Workshop, showcasing skills and traditions passed down through generations of Traveller women.
This free, family-friendly event celebrates traditions that are at risk of being lost while promoting cultural pride, understanding, and respect. Open to all, the event welcomes Traveller and settled communities to come together to explore, experience, and celebrate an important part of Ireland's living heritage.
This is a free, family-friendly event and everyone is welcome. Visitors are welcome to attend throughout the event and participate in the Traveller Living History Exhibition, storytelling sessions, and interactive heritage workshops. Light refreshments will be available. The event aims to promote cultural understanding, celebrate Traveller heritage, and preserve traditions that are at risk of being lost.
