Tracing our Ancient Routes

Join us for a screening of a new short film 'Tracing our Ancient Routes - Rathcroghan Royal Complex' & meet the archaeologist involved in the proposed Tulsk to Rathcroghan Active Travel Project.

The proposed active travel scheme from Tulsk to Rathcroghan (5.2km in length) will provide a link from the internationally important Rathcroghan Archaeological Complex (currently included on the Irish UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as one of the Royal Sites of Ireland) to Tulsk village and Rathcroghan Visitor Centre.

As part of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the project, archaeological test excavation was carried out along the route, to locate archaeological remains.

Funded by TII through Roscommon County Council, AMS (Archaeological Management Solutions) carried out the test excavations, under ministerial consent.

The proposed route intersects with a number of ancient trackways that led people over many years to important sites in the complex. The archeologists took the opportunity to investigate these ancient trackways. This short film gives an insight into the findings to date.
