Tour of the Quadrangle & James Mitchell Geology Museum University of Galway

Join a guided tour through the Quadrangle Building, which first opened to students in 1849 and is the oldest part of former Queen’s College Galway, currently University of Galway. The tour will include the James Mitchell Geology Museum, which contains valuable rocks, minerals and fossil specimens, including the original plaster replica skullcap which William King used to name Neanderthal people in 1863. Among other highlights are the Aula Maxima, or ‘Great Hall’ where important meetings and examinations were once staged, and the beautiful gardens.

While visitors with mobility issues can access some areas, e.g. Quadrangle courtyard and Aula Maxima, this tour will include steps and stairs in other places.

Clamping is in operation on the university campus. There are a limited amount of designated Pay and Display places, but these are often full. Visitors are advised to use the pay and display parking facilities at Galway Cathedral and walk onto campus from there or use public transport.
