As part of Heritage Week’s 2025 theme ‘Exploring Our Foundations’, Galway Civic Trust is hosting a group tour of the Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland on Saturday 16 August. While we often think of heritage in terms of stone walls and manuscripts, the digital devices that shaped our homes, classrooms and workplaces also form part of our cultural foundations.
The Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland, located in the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at the University of Galway’s North Campus, offers a unique opportunity to explore the roots of our digital world. This is the only museum of its kind in the country, tracing the development of computing and communication technologies over the past century.
Visitors can see and interact with early radios, rotary dial telephones, typewriters, and vintage computers like the DEC PDP-11 and Apple II. There’s a hands-on display of classic video games such as Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Super Mario, sure to spark memories and curiosity alike. You'll also encounter Morse keys, film cameras, and classroom devices once at the cutting edge of education.
In revisiting these foundational technologies, we celebrate not only the innovation of the past, but the ways in which it continues to shape how we live, learn and connect today.
The tour begins at 2pm on Saturday 16 August 2025. Admission is free, but booking is essential. Please email bookings@galwaycivictrust.ie to reserve your place.
