Tour of Ballydarton House, Co. Carlow in Association with Historic Houses of Ireland

A strikingly inventive Tudor-revival house dating from 1830, lovely Ballydarton was designed by the notable architect Daniel Robertson who was responsible for many fine houses in the south east of Ireland including Dunleckney Manor and Wells House. When writing to Henry Faulkner of the nearby Castletown House in 1835 about Walter Newton of Dunleckney, Robertson wrote: “I hope he has seen my beautiful, my own Ballydarton, that house is my pride”.

The Smyth family saved Ballydarton from an uncertain future in 1969 and continue to farm there. A very early example of the unique granite Carlow fence still exists at the front of the house today.

Ballydarton House is delighted to be a recipient of the 2026 Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme, which is administered by the Heritage Council in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and co-funded by the European Union.
