The River Remembers: Stories of Salmon and Stewardship on the Coomhola River

Join us for a citizen science workshop and the premiere of The River Remembers, a Heritage Council-funded documentary celebrating the people, stories, and natural heritage of the Coomhola River.

Through intimate oral history interviews with local residents, anglers, farmers, musicians, conservationists & schoolchildren, the film explores the deep connection between the Coomhola river and the community that has grown alongside it.

Beautifully filmed along one of Ireland's precious Blue Dot rivers, The River Remembers reflects on how our relationship with the natural world has changed across generations, and how knowing, loving and understanding a place inspires us to care for it.

Engage in hands-on outdoor learning with a free citizen science workshop at the StreamSchool at 5pm before the film premiere at 7pm at Coomhola Lodge, a place woven into several of the stories featured in the film. Once associated with enforcing the laws that criminalised subsistence salmon fishing, it now opens its doors to celebrate the very stories, traditions, and lived experiences that those laws sought to suppress.

Produced in partnership with StreamScapes, the Coomhola Borlin Development Association, Coomhola Salmon Trust, the Coomhola Salmon & Trout Anglers Association, the Cork Folklore Project and the Mealagh Valley Oral History Project, this film preserves the voices of today so they can continue to inspire future generations.
