The Rain Tells Us Everything (Exhibition)

The Rain Tells Us Everything is a group exhibition at the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, curated by Clara McSweeney, which explores landscapes and environments under increasing pressure from climate change. Bringing together new work by Catherine McDonald, Katie Nolan and Niamh Schmidtke, the exhibition reflects on the many ways our natural and cultural heritage is being transformed, threatened and, in some cases, permanently altered.

Responding to this year’s National Heritage Week theme, Heritage at Risk, the exhibition highlights places, ecosystems and communities whose stories are often hidden from view. Catherine McDonald’s new film Where Salt Moves examines the growing impact of saltwater intrusion on freshwater environments, connecting melting Arctic ice with farming communities in the Philippines. Katie Nolan’s installation investigates Ireland’s rapidly expanding data-centre infrastructure and its impact on landscapes once occupied by farms, forests and wild habitats. Niamh Schmidtke’s immersive installation and participatory artwork CHANTER draws attention to the environmental legacy of industrial pollution in the Shannon Estuary, using collective singing as an act of remembrance, protest and hope.

Together, these artists ask audiences to consider what is at stake when environmental change accelerates beyond our ability to notice it. Rather than presenting heritage as something fixed in the past, The Rain Tells Us Everything reminds us that heritage is living, evolving and deeply connected to the health of our landscapes, waters and communities.
