The President’s Cup 1889/90
Lecture [Free] and launch of a booklet [€10] of match reports commemorating Roscommon's first great Gaelic Football competition. Full proceeds from all booklets go to charity.
In a year when Roscommon had its first county championship, the President’s Cup was beyond a secondary competition and the interest (34 clubs) greatly surpassed that of the championship (16) that year.
In addition to being county president of the GAA and a highly-regarded politician, Jasper Tully was editor of the Roscommon Herald and it was he who provided a set of medals and organised ‘The President’s Cup’.
This booklet, for Heritage Week only, shares the story of of what was called 'The Greatest Gaelic Match in Roscommon '.
