" Fluttering in the Dovecote : The Pigeon Houses of County Galway"
Christy Cunniffe is undertaking a study of dovecotes, aslo known as pigeon houses in County Galway, and has just over 40 examples identified to date. The presentation will comprise an examination of their function and use through time. It will also look at their different architectural forms.
Dovecotes were a measure of status and were a prestige item both to the medieval Lords and later landed gentry. They were also an important source of food but as the speaker will explain - not for all.
The finest example of a functioning dovecote in County Galway is the conserved Cote here at Woodville Walled Garden. It is hoped that further examples will be identified through this presentation.
Christy Cunniffe is a community archaeologist with an interest in the archaeology associated with Demesne Landscape.

Booking is advised as limited places available. To prebook please email Margarita at woodvillegardens@gmail.com. Admission fee €10 per person including light refreshments and entry to the walled garden
