The Lorrha River - An Ecology and a History

All are invited to attend a dedicated heritage and environmental event focusing on the historical and ecological importance of the Lorrha River. Designed to raise awareness about the waterway's role in shaping the local landscape, the event will also explore current aquatic biodiversity and discuss future conservation strategies.

The event will open with an insightful heritage talk outlining the river's past. Attendees will then move bankside to participate in a live "kick-sampling" demonstration—a standard citizen science method used to safely collect aquatic macroinvertebrates from the riverbed. Following the collection, participants will use microscopes to analyse the various life-forms, gaining a unique view into the hidden health of the river ecosystem.

Finally, the session will focus on the future, opening a community conversation on active roles and simple ecological steps locals can take to protect water quality and enhance habitats. Admission is free and open to all ages. Participants are advised to wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.
