The Influence of the Normans

The Normans significantly influenced Nenagh’s development particularly through the establishment of a walled town and the building of Nenagh Castle by Theobald FitzWalter in the 13th Century. The Normans left their mark on Nenagh beyond just the Castle. They influenced the town’s layout, architecture and overall development and its walled structure. Nenagh became a popular market town and the Normans were a significant influence on the local area.

For Heritage Week Kevin Whelan, tour guide with Nenagh Castle and guide for ‘Walking Tours of Nenagh’ will share the benefit of his encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of the Castle and the local area as well as the society of the times.
