The Holy Rood and the Cult of John the Baptist - Medieval Ballinrobe Reconsidered
Historian Michael Brabazon will present his groundbreaking thesis of the origin of Ballinrobe in the veneration of the Holy Rood of St. Oswald, king of Northumbria, martyred in AD 642. Michael widens the scope of his investigation to include the long forgotten ancient Cult of John the Baptist in Ireland, the monks of which provided care for pilgrims to sacred sites. This event is free but donations to Historical Ballinrobe are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
Michael Brabazon, originally from Swinford, is a retired UK civil servant who now lives in West Cork. He is a passionate Mayo historian.
