The 1926 Census was the first official population census carried out after the establishment of the Irish Free State.
Released online by the National Archives of Ireland in April 2026, the census is a landmark resource for family historians, local historians, and researchers. It includes more than 700,000 digitised household returns, offering a detailed snapshot of life in Ireland during a period of significant social, political, and economic change.
The 1926 census also introduced several new questions, including details on land ownership, employment status, and whether children had been orphaned. At the same time, it omitted earlier questions relating to literacy and disability, reflecting changing priorities in how the new State gathered information about its population.
