The ringing of church bells is an ancient art used to call people to worship in churches. Most churches have one bell, and some are fortunate to have a set of ringing bells. There are 37 towers in Ireland that have operational ringing bells, and St. Fachtna's is one of them, with 6 bells in their tower.
Bellringers from around Munster are coming together for a district practice and there will be people available to explain this ancient art of bell ringing between 3 and 4.30pm on Saturday 16th August.
The ringing chamber can be seen from the Narthex of the Cathedral (just inside the front door).
There is also a harvest display and craft stall in the Narthex during Heritage Week which is open from 9am to 9pm daily.
Our new interactive heritage display will be installed and ready to be used by visitors who would like to find out more about the history of St. Fachtna's Cathedral.
All are welcome.
Those who come along to this event will get to see how the Bells in St. Fachtna's Cathedral are rung, and there will be bell ringers there to explain how it works and to answer any questions that you may have.
