Spin & Weave: Exploring Heritage Crafts
Join us for a hands-on journey into the world of traditional fibre arts in this immersive workshop that celebrates the beauty and value of heritage crafts. We’ll begin by learning the ancient art of spinning wool into yarn using a drop spindle — a simple yet powerful tool that dates back to Neolithic times.
Once you've spun your own yarn, we’ll shift our focus to frame loom weaving. Using your handspun yarn along with other wool yarns, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind woven piece that reflects your creativity and connection to traditional making.
This workshop will be delivered by Annie Gambrill, Killala Woolcraft. Annie is a shepherdess, an ambassador for heritage crafts and a teacher of traditional hand spinning, weaving, natural dyeing and Dorset button making. Originally from West Sussex and now living in North Mayo, she specialises in hand spinning on restored spinning wheels and weaving Irish sheep's wool yarn on her flying shuttle loom.
This workshop is free but booking is essential as places are limited.
This workshop is presented by Killala Woolcraft, in association with Westport Library and the Mayo Heritage Office.
