Join author Richard Maher and local historian Seamus Cullen for a fascinating talk on the extraordinary life of Sir Charles Wogan, one of Clane's most remarkable but little-known historical figures.

Born at Richardstown in the 1680s, Wogan rose from the ranks of County Kildare's Catholic gentry to become a soldier, diplomat, spy and writer at the heart of European politics. He fought in the Jacobite Rising of 1715, escaped from London's notorious Newgate Prison while facing certain execution, and went on to serve the exiled Stuart court across Europe.

His most famous exploit was the daring rescue of Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska from captivity in Austria, enabling her marriage to the exiled James III in one of the most daring episodes of the Jacobite age. Wogan's remarkable career took him from Ireland to Britain, France, Italy and Spain, where he served as a senior military officer, royal envoy and Acting Governor of Barcelona.

The talk will also explore his friendships with literary giants Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope, revealing a man of letters as well as a man of action.
