Shillelagh Heritage Trail - Guided Tour
National Heritage Week – Shillelagh Heritage Trail Guided Tour
Join us for a special National Heritage Week guided walk along the Shillelagh Heritage Trail on Sunday, 16th August, as we explore the people, places and stories that shaped our village and continue to influence its future.
This family-friendly tour will bring participants through key heritage sites including the former Union Workhouse and Chapel, the historic Courthouse, the Church and Cork Oak Tree, the Fitzwilliam Railway Line and Station, and other important landmarks connected to Shillelagh’s rich social, cultural and industrial history. Along the way, local guides will share fascinating stories of famine relief, emigration, education, faith, transport and community life spanning almost two centuries.
More than a look at the past, the event will also highlight how heritage is helping to shape the future of Shillelagh. Participants will hear about ongoing community-led initiatives focused on heritage preservation, recreation, biodiversity, greenways, walking trails, sports facilities and wider village development. These projects are inspired by local history and community engagement, ensuring that Shillelagh remains a vibrant place to live, work and visit.
Whether you are a local resident, a former resident returning home, a history enthusiast or simply curious about the stories hidden within the village, this guided tour offers a unique opportunity to discover Shillelagh’s heritage and learn how our community is building on that legacy for future generations.
Celebrate our past. Connect with our present. Help shape our future.
