Wild Child Day on the Barrow – Citizen Science, Biodiversity and Water Heritage.
Celebrate National Heritage Week with a fun-filled day of discovery at the Barrow Valley Activities Hub as part of the Town of Books Festival. Hosted by Waterways College and Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO), this free public event invites families, children and nature enthusiasts to explore the rich biodiversity and water heritage of the River Barrow through hands-on activities and expert-led talks.
The day begins at 12.00pm with Citizen Science for Children, a drop-in kick-sampling session at the Duiske River confluence with the River Barrow. Children and families will discover the fascinating creatures that live beneath the water’s surface while learning how citizen science helps protect our rivers. No booking is required—everyone is welcome.
At 2.00pm, join Éanna Ní Lamhna, one of Ireland’s best-known naturalists and environmental educators, for a special Walk & Talk. The afternoon includes a guided walk around the hub site led by Éanna, followed by a Q&A session under the tent, offering visitors the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Ireland’s wildlife, biodiversity and natural heritage.
Whether you're keen to get hands-on with river wildlife, deepen your understanding of local biodiversity, or simply enjoy a day outdoors, Wild Child Day on the Barrow promises an engaging and educational experience for all ages.
