Islandeady Heritge Committee are hosting an Open Day to mark and celebrate the Restoration of the Obelisk in Raheens, Castlebar.

Raheens Obelisk is an urn-topped "cenotaph" or obelisk, erected by Dodwell Browne (d. 1819) representing an important component of the early nineteenth-century built heritage of County Mayo and the Castlebar/Islandeady Area.

The multi-year conservation of the structure was funded by the Built Heritage Investment Scheme with support from Siobhan Sexton and the Mayo County Council Heritage Department. Southgate Associates were the conservation consultants with works carried out by the expert Heritage Masonry team led by Des Rainey.

There will be a number of speakers at the Open Day, among them James Byrne, Managing Director and Senior Built Heritage Consultant / Licenced Archaeologist at Southgate Associates, who will discuss the history and conservation of Raheen’s Obelisk.

This will be followed by a site visit to Raheen’s Wood which allows viewing of the Obelisk.
