  • Co. Corcaigh - Contae

Fermoy native, marathon swimmer and freshwater ecologist Owen O’Keefe has a deep connection with the River Blackwater, shaped by childhood along its banks, years swimming in its waters, and his work as an ecologist. These perspectives have given him a unique insight and a profound appreciation for the river, and for the relationships between its natural, built, cultural, and spiritual heritage. In this talk, Owen will reflect on his relationship with the river, and on how we, as individuals and communities, urgently need to reconnect with our rivers to address the many threats to their survival as living heritage.

A short walk (approx. 400mtrs) along the Blackwater will take place following the talk, weather permitting.

Owen O’Keeffe is a highly accomplished marathon open-water swimmer and environmental ecologist from Fermoy. Affectionately known as the ‘Fermoy Fish’, he made history as the youngest Irish swimmer to cross the English Channel, aged 16. Owen has pioneered numerous International and local aquatic feats: details of which are in the link below.
