Portlaw - Exploring a model industrial village

Portlaw holds a unique place in the landscape of planned industrial towns in Ireland. For almost two centuries the factory complex built by the Malcomson’s has provided a backdrop to the village, firstly as mill in the19th century and as a tannery in the 20th century. The importance of Portlaw in the industrial history of Ireland, as well as the Malcomson’s links to shipbuilding, cannot be underestimated and the development of the village plays a part in that story. Portlaw provides an example of the importance of occupancy as a means to reimagine and revive buildings at risk in our community. It also provides examples of the risk to older structures which were once vibrant and full of life. Why not take the opportunity to come along and explore the village and its surroundings during Heritage Week. Walk through the streets of the village exploring the foundations of our modern village taking in the social and industrial landscapes and follow up with a visit to the Heritage Centre. All events are free.

Heritage at Risk encourages us to explore the built, natural and cultural aspects of our heritage that are endangered, for us to reimagine and revive these sites, artefacts and practices. Portlaw provides the opportunity to explore a living example of a 19th century industrial village.
