Open House at Townley Hall, A Masterpiece in Irish Architecture

Situated close to the Boyne River, County Louth and home to the Townley Balfour family since the early 1700's, Townley Hall is a magnificent Georgian mansion surrounded by ancient woodland and parkland. The current house, built between 1794 and 1799 for Blayney Townley Balfour III, was designed by Francis Johnston, architect of the GPO and Chapel Royal at Dublin Castle.

During Heritage Week, visitors are invited to explore the house’s rich social and architectural history as well as enjoy the surrounding gardens.

A guided tour will offer insights into the house’s elegant Georgian features and famously refined architectural detail.

There will be a talk whilch will explore the origins of Townley Hall, the evolution of the design and influences on patron and architect in the last decade of the 18th Century.

Visit the restored Walled Garden which grows a huge array of crops and is distributed to various local charities. All run by local volunteers. Listen to Hilda, the head gardener as she explains how the crops are grown using the "No Dig " method of cultivation.

Enjoy refreshments in the restored old Kitchen.
