Old Connaught Graveyard and Medieval Church

In previous years people visited this graveyard for historical purposes - Old Connaught is a very old part of Bray with an interesting history. This area has connections with Ballyman Church and surrounding, the old Village - Hamlet of Old Connaught, the Walshe family, the Plunkett family and more. Allied to this there are a number of people buried here which have long associations with Bray. On site we will a copy of a recent survey of the graveyard, helpfully produced by Cora Coleman (thanks Cora) this report has been positively receive by both Dunlaoghaire and Wicklow Heritage. On site we will have a survey and list of burials by Brian which was 'Cantwell' carried out in the 1970's (this is also available on our website - https://themedievalbrayproject.wicklowheritage.org/new-contributions/old-conna-church-notes-on-its-historical-background - a number of people have found their ancestors buried here. This graveyard was used as a burial site before St. Peter's graveyard was put into use. The earliest date is upside down on the O'Neale headstone and is dated from 1661. The Heritage Department in Dunlaoghaire Rathdown Council have received a report from the Medieval and Historical Bray Project regarding the maintenance and repair of headstones and metal grave surrounds and we hope work will commence in the near future. While the gravel path ensures that that the graveyard is wheelchair accessible there is a vey slight incline through the gateway and a wheelchair user may need a bit of help at this juncture.
