Paintings and Conservation of Sigginstown Castle 16th Century Tower
21, 23 Lúnasa, 1:30in - 2:30in
- Sigginstown Castle Coach House
- Sigginstown castle, Tomhaggard, Co. Wexford
- Co. Loch Garman
Sigginstown Castle has been restored from ruin. From 2019 to now many people have put their energy and talents into the buildings to bring them back to life. This is a special opportunity to hear Veda Crewe, a medieval and renaissance-style painter, talk about the various works in the castle, executed over the past 6 years. This year we are doing fresco work in the tower stairwell to capture some period scenes and see how this authentic technique of pigments on fresh lime mortar differs from our earlier decorative art using modern mineral paints in the tower rooms.
We will show you the sketches and discuss techniques for execution, paints and processes used. Also conservation challenges working on a 500 year old structure!
Note that tower tours are a separate paid activity - daily at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. during Heritage Week. Please purchase a tour ticket if you wish to see the tower. This event will take place between the two tours in the Coach House Cafe and is free.
Please do not turn down the Cul-De-Sac road or use Eircode as you will need to turn around. The main gate will be open which is on the Norman Way - use Google Maps for "Sigginstown Castle". GPS and Google Maps link for public entrance: 52.205977, -6.444603
