Medieval Thomastown: Walls and Towers

Did you know that Thomastown was once a walled town?

"In 1374 a charter of Edward III permitted the burgesses of Thomastown to charge tolls on all goods sold in the town or passing through it for a term of twenty years. The proceeds of this were to go towards building the town wall, testifying to the importance of Thomastown as an inland port." - Urban Archaeological Survey: Kilkenny

Archaeologist Ben Murtagh will lead a walking tour around the circuit of Thomastown's medieval walls, pointing out where parts of the wall survive today, and exploring the history of the medieval town and its defences.

Meet at Sweetman's (Mullins') Castle, below the bridge.

This is an outdoor event and parts of the tour may cover rough or uneven ground. Please dress accordingly.
