Locating Bench Marks, Preserving Heritage

19 Lúnasa, 11rn - 12in

  • Co. Baile Átha Cliath

Ordnance Survey bench marks were cut into stone structures across Ireland from the 1830s through to the late twentieth century as part of an exercise to measure height across the island. Over time they have disappeared due to infrastructural and environmental change and the lack of recognition of bench marks as significant tangible heritage.

In this online webinar, Dr. Catherine Porter (Head of Subject and Associate Professor in Geography, University of Limerick) will explore the Locating Bench Marks, Preserving Heritage digital archive. This archive contains photographs of extant Ordnance Survey bench marks in County Limerick, collected by project team and volunteers between 2025 and 2026.
