Rainwater and Restoration: Traditional Leadwork at Dunleckney Manor

How did historic houses manage the Irish rain? Join us at Dunleckney Manor for an introduction to the traditional craft of architectural leadwork and the vital role that gutters, hopper heads and downpipes play in carrying rainwater safely away from historic buildings.

Visitors will hear a short introduction to Dunleckney's history as we walk around the gardens and hear about the role of rainwater goods in protecting historic buildings, and the reasons lead has been used in architecture for centuries.

An experienced traditional craftsman will demonstrate some of the tools, materials and techniques used to shape, join and repair architectural leadwork. There will be an opportunity to examine examples of the work at close quarters, learn how historic features can be repaired rather than replaced, and ask questions about the skills involved.

After the tour and talk visitors will be welcome to have some light refreshments in a garden marquee (included in ticket price) and walk around the grounds.

This informal event is suitable for anyone interested in historic buildings, conservation, traditional crafts or local heritage. No previous knowledge is required.
