Lacken Heritage Day

Lacken's First Heritage Day will take place from 12.00 noon to 3.00 pm in the beautiful Lacken Sensory Garden, nestled at the entrance to Lacken Strand beside Lacken Church. This special event will celebrate the rich heritage, traditions and community spirit of our area while creating an enjoyable day for people of all ages.

Visitors will experience a lively programme of traditional music performed by local musicians and singers, together with a special appearance by the much-loved Strawboys and traditional set dancers, bringing the customs and folklore of rural Ireland to life.

Throughout the day, local knowledge and traditional skills will be showcased through a range of demonstrations and workshops. Annie Gambrill, a local textile artist, shepherdess and wool educator, will lead hands-on felting workshops, sharing the story of wool from sheep to finished craft. Children can enjoy interactive workshops from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm, learning to spin wool on a drop spindle and discovering the traditional skill of butter making.

Additional attractions include a historical costume display, vintage farming tools and woodworking demonstrations, and a wool craft exhibition celebrating local craftsmanship and heritage. Families can also enjoy a visit from D'Briasta Ice Cream, while refreshments including homemade boxty, tea and coffee will be served throughout the afternoon.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Wild Atlantic Way, this unique event will offer visitors an authentic taste of Mayo's culture, history, music, crafts and hospitality, making it a memorable celebration of heritage and community.
