The town of Kilmainham dates back to the 13th century; it developed on the River Camac, south of and below the hill on which stood the Priory of the Knights Hospitaller. The town bridge linked two important routes out of Dublin, one from the city to the south of Ireland and the other to the west. The town and its approaches have changed and developed over 800 years, but its original shape and location are still discernible in the streetscape. On this Walk and Talk, you are invited to meander through the 'highways' and laneways of Kilmainham town and its surroundings with local historian Francis Thackaberry and observe evidence of some of the rich layers of history and heritage which can be seen along the way.
