Storytelling lies at the heart of preserving traditional culture and history, no more so than among the Gaelic peoples of Ireland and Scotland as they survived centuries of cultural suppression. Clare has a several notable torchbearers for this ancient practice, and this talk will feature two contrasting practitioners. Balor O’Brien will provide an overview of the oral tradition and how it has survived into the digital age. He will describe the varied landscape of storytelling – yarns about people, events and places; humorous tales; legends and myths; children’s stories; the traveller tradition, and more besides. The remarkable Paddy Hynes will also reflect on his hugely long experience of being a North Clare seannachie (local storyteller).

Balor O’Brien’s storytelling practice combines folklore, history and heritage, and provides immersive experiences for adults and children under the brand ‘Balor Otherworld’. He also combines storytelling with historical walks, often focusing on key figures from Clare (eg Maire Rua, Biddy Early, Brian Boru, St Cronan etc). He also screens short films he has produced, and lectures on ancient Celtic traditions. Paddy Hynes is a renowned storyteller and farmer from the Burren, still weaving his magic as he draws near to his 100th year.
