This talk, titled Ireland's Great Gospel Books, the European Context, is by Dr Rosemary Power.

In the early Middle Ages Ireland produced a number of beautifully illuminated Gospel books, written on vellum in flowing script, with additional and usually coloured decoration.

The best known and most profound is the Book of Kells. This is a work of wonderful depth, imagery and colour, produced just before and during the Viking invasions. These books did not exist in isolation and we have to look to Europe to understand the layout they followed, their models, the sourcing of some of the colours used and understanding of the symbolism of certain images and colouring.

Rosemary Power is an academic and writer who is recognised as an expert in this area. There will an opportunity at the end of the talk to ask questions.
