Water Quality and In-Stream Invertebrates & Kick Sampling Workshop
With the Waters of LIFE team
Hosted by Lough Grainey Nature Sanctuary (loughgrainey.org)

A Citizen Science Workshop

How Clean is Our River?
In this practical outdoor workshop, we will learn the technique of kick sampling that is used to identify a variety of invertebrates in the water. This information, in turn, will help us to find out the water quality in the river. Participants will learn to carry out kick-sampling, identify invertebrates that are present (and absent) in the river, and will learn how to tell the state of the water quality. We will also learn about what affects water quality in our river.

River Grainey (Graney, or Gréine) is a High Status waterbody and is part of the larger sub catchment that also includes Lough Grainey (Graney, or Gréine), it is part of the precious natural heritage of the Graney Valley, in East Clare. By learning to recognise the factors that affect water quality, we will be able to better care for and protect this unique, beautiful river and the natural and cultural heritage that it is part of.
