On 17th March 1844, the Assizes at the new courthouse located in the centre of the town of Nenagh opened. Over the past 180 years this building has seen at least tens of thousands of people during its history go through its doors and into the courtroom from petty session matters such as public intoxication to ever more serious offences such as treason and murder. Infamous trials took place in these rooms from the Langley Murder Trial in 1850 to the Cormack Brothers in 1858 and even that of the Fenian Rising leaders in 1867. This talk will focus on the history of the courts in Nenagh from the early eighteenth century up until the present day, with an examination into changes in the Irish Justice system. Located in the centre of the town’s historic quarters, the courthouse as an institution has been a central part in shaping Nenagh’s legal, social, political and policing history.

This talk will take place on Wednesday 20th August 2025 at 7pm at Nenagh Tourism Office Banba Square (across the road from the Courthouse) and presented by Michael Reynolds, who has worked at the courthouse for the past 2 years.
