Hidden Letters- Sacred Patterns - Art Workshop

Hidden Letters – Sacred Patterns is an adult heritage art workshop inspired by the animals, symbols, and illuminated letters of the Book of Kells. This creative drawing session invites participants to slow down and explore the beauty, symbolism, and craftsmanship of medieval Irish manuscript art in a calm and welcoming environment.

Using visual references from the Book of Kells and other early Irish manuscripts, participants will discover hidden birds, mythical creatures, spirals, knotwork, and sacred patterns woven into decorative lettering over 1,200 years ago. The workshop includes a short introduction to the history and symbolism of illuminated manuscripts, followed by guided drawing exercises focused on Celtic ornament, animal forms, and decorative pattern-making.

Participants will create their own artwork inspired by ancient Irish manuscript traditions, including illuminated initials, symbolic motifs, and hand-drawn decorative borders. The session is suitable for beginners as well as anyone interested in Irish heritage, drawing, mindfulness, and creative exploration.

All materials will be provided, including specialist drawing papers, pens, and reference imagery. The workshop encourages observation, creativity, and connection with Ireland’s rich visual heritage through contemporary art practice.

This event is part of National Heritage Week and celebrates the enduring artistic legacy of Ireland’s medieval manuscript tradition.
