The Claddagh Ring
In line with this year's theme "Exploring our Foundations" Museum staff have prepared a special tour that begins with the origins of Galway – from Gaelic fort to Anglo-Norman town – and which then focuses on an iconic object that reveals a story that has helped to shape the city’s unique character.
Galway City Museum is home to the oldest known Claddagh Ring, which was made by slave-turned-silversmith Richard Joyce of Galway around 1700. Having been made and worn in Galway for more than 300 years, the Claddagh Ring has become synonymous with the city and a symbol of Irish identity abroad, thanks to its popularity among the Irish Diaspora.
