Heritage Talk: The Galway Hooker - Ciaran Oliver

15, 20 Lúnasa, 11rn - 12in

  • Galway Tourist Information Centre
  • Galway City Museum, Spanish Parade
  • H91CX5P
  • Co. Gaillimh – Cathair

Join Ciaran Oliver for a talk on the Galway Hooker, one of Ireland's most iconic traditional sailing boats. Galway Hookers have long been part of the maritime heritage of Galway Bay, historically used for fishing and for transporting turf, seaweed, and other goods along the west coast.

Ciaran comes from the Claddagh, the historic fishing village at the mouth of the River Corrib once home to a large fleet of hookers and a thriving, tight-knit fishing community. Drawing on this personal connection, Ciaran will share the history, craftsmanship, and cultural significance of the Galway Hooker — how these boats were built and sailed, and how their legacy continues to be celebrated today.
