Heritage & Nature Day on Knockirr / Carbury Bog

Butterfly workshop (2:00 – 4:00pm)
The initial part of the workshop will take place in the Castle Inn (Carbury Village) and then move to Knockirr Bog. Jesmond is the author of two books, “Discovering Irish Butterflies & their Habitats” and "The Irish Butterfly Book".

Hand cut turf demonstration (4:00 – 5:30pm)
Turf cutters from Ballyteague, Allen and Carbury will demonstrate hand cut turf. Attendees will be able to try their hand with the slean.

End of Harvest BBQ (5:30 – 6:30pm)
Peter Delaney will provide a BBQ on Knockirr bog as part of our local community building around the end of harvest time which our ancestors would’ve celebrated.

Flora & Fauna Walk & Talk (4:45pm)
Award winning garden creator and horticulturalist David Shortall will provide a Flora and Fauna ‘Walk and Talk’ for those who want to learn more about the nature on Knockirr bog.

Trad Music on the bog (5:30 – 6:30pm) (TBC)
We hope to have some live traditional music with bog themed sets.

‘Tòch | Dig’ Collective (4:00 – 6:30pm)
‘Tóch | Dig’ artists will be in attendance as part of Phase 2 of their Creative Ireland Funded project to discuss their work with peatland communities in Kildare.

Drinks in the Castle Inn (6:30pm onwards)

All events will take place on the bog except for the initial part of the butterfly workshop which will take place in the Castle Inn Carbury.

We’re a community group in NW Kildare (Carbury & Balyna) interested in culture, tourism, heritage, nature & the arts centered on our shared cultural, natural & built heritage including Carbury Castle, the source of the Boyne & our local NHA designated bog
