Join us for a fun and family-friendly Heritage Hunt on Abbey Island!
This activity is centred on the historic cemetery and medieval abbey ruins of Ahamore and is open to all. Whether you're young or old, local or a visitor, you'll enjoy spending time in this wonderful place.
As you make your way around Abbey Island, you’ll uncover fascinating heritage features—both natural and built—that make this coastal graveyard so unique. There will be rewards for enthusiastic hunters and plenty of chances to learn about local history, culture, and nature along the way.
This event is brought to you by the Sea-CCHange project. This research initiative is collaborating with local communities to gain a deeper understanding of how climate change is impacting historic coastal graveyards, such as Abbey Island, and exploring ways to adapt to these increasing challenges.
The SEA-CCHange team will be on-site on Saturday, August 16th, to welcome visitors and support the activity. If you can’t make it on the day, don’t worry—the Heritage Hunt will be available throughout August 2025. You can join in anytime by downloading the OurTreasureHunt App (available on Google Play for Android and the App Store for iPhone), locating the Abbey Island Hunt on the map, and following the clues.
Participants will receive a digital medal based on the number of clues they complete—Gold (100%), Silver (75%), Bronze (50%), or Nickel (25%).

Please note that access to Abbey Island Graveyard is via a beach crossing, which may be difficult for those with limited mobility. We recommend planning your visit around low or outgoing tides to ensure safe access to the area. The ground within the graveyard is also uneven, so sturdy footwear is advised.
