Most likely built in the early 1800s or even earlier Hastings Farmhouse is Shannon's oldest vernacular building. Ruined since the 1970s, it is the focus of a project by Dúchas na Sionna (Hastings Farmhouse) CLG to restore it for community and heritage use. In advance of restoration an archaeological excavation is set to take place on 18th, 19th and 20th August culminating in the Heritage Week event on 24th August. This is a family fun event where participants can hear about the history of the house and the Hastings family who occupied it from c.1847 until the late 1960s. Learn about its use as a safe house during the War of Independence and the pre-town agricultural landscape of the area we now call Shannon. Come and hear about the resource that the restored farmhouse will be for the people of Shannon and the generous support that the project is gathering. The project is currently the subject of a planning application. We hope to announce the start date of the restoration project at the Heritage Week Event. The finished buildings will be:
An Authentic Heritage and Cultural Site,
An Exhibition Gallery Space,
A Community Meeting Venue,
A Training Facility,
A focal point that fosters a community sense of place.
This is an opportunity to hear about this exciting heritage project in Ireland's first twentieth century town. Enjoy an informative afternoon learning about this vital piece of Shannon's heritage while listening to traditional musical entertainment. Refreshments will be served.
This event is hosted by Dúchas na Sionna (Hastings Farmhouse) CLG and Shannon Archaeological & Historical Society.
