Belmont Barracks was built in 1795 overlooking the village of Mullaghbawn with extensive views across the valley. To the left of the building is whipping lane where the blacksmith Thomas Lappin was scourged to death. Using the poems The Carrive Blacksmith and The Market Stone to give social history of 1798 in South Armagh. Leaving the barracks we will walk, talk and tell stories of the area including local poetry & song to highlight events through history. Our destination is the penal massrock site at Carrive concluding our talk with detail of penal laws & massrocks in various townlands and rendition of Bard of Armagh - a ballad based on Bishop Donnelly who lived in South Armagh.
