Lower Main Street, Letterkenny, or "The Foot of the Town" as it's known locally, is an area often overlooked by visitors and townsfolk alike. Yet is an area steeped in history, and which contained important industries and businesses, which were vital to the town in their day. There was a large residential population on Lower Main Street, and many of the original houses remain.

The RIC barracks, which became the former Garda barracks was situated on Lower Main Street, and it now houses the Town House Bar. Other buildings of note, include Kelly's Hardware , which was the former Boyd residence, the Devlin Hall and the old forge. The 3 Old Town Bridges, Oldtown itself, the railway, and the River Swilly are also important elements in the story of the foot of the town. Many of these buildings have disappeared but are in the living memory of local towns people, so come with us on our stroll through this neglected area of Letterkenny, and hear the stories about the characters, buildings and businesses before they are completely lost to memory.

Also, following the walk, join us in the Station House Hotel, for some light refreshments and where our new Heritage Trail brochure will be launched. The new brochure contains a clear map of the trail, and a detailed guide for each stop, along with a QR code, taking you to videos linked to each point of interest. This event of free of charge.
Donations gratefully accepted on the night if you so wish.
