Founded in 1216 by King Cathal Crobhdearg O’Conor, Ballintubber Abbey stands as a remarkable testament to Ireland’s enduring spiritual heritage. Known as “The Abbey that refused to die,” it has served as a place of worship for more than eight centuries, surviving suppression, burning, and abandonment, yet never ceasing to hold Mass.
This event, Foundations of Faith at Ballintubber Abbey, invites visitors to journey back to the Abbey’s earliest days, exploring the vision, devotion, and resilience that shaped its foundation. Through engaging talks, guided walks, and heritage displays, participants will uncover the historical context of 13th-century Ireland, the role of the Augustinian Canons, and the deep connection between the Abbey and the local community it has served for generations.
Special focus will be given to the symbolism within the Abbey’s architecture, the craftsmanship of its stonework, and the stories of faith and perseverance that echo through its walls. Visitors will also learn about the Abbey’s place on the ancient Tochar Phádraig pilgrim path, a route walked for centuries by those seeking spiritual renewal.
More than a history lesson, this is an opportunity to engage with a living heritage site — a place where the past is not preserved behind glass, but woven into the daily life of the community.
Come and discover how the foundation stones laid in faith over 800 years ago continue to inspire, unite, and guide pilgrims and visitors today.
